Col iyo abaar, or conflict and drought. In Somalia, these words have been uttered for generations, in both prayers and curses. They are two disasters that Somalis try to avoid at all costs, yet which continue to devastate the country.

The map of Somalia is an alarming shade of red. A new Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) map of Somalia was published this month. According to the latest IPC figures, which serve as the international benchmark for food security, an estimated 6 million people in Somalia faced acute food insecurity between April and June. That amounts to around one third of the population.
